Earl J. Mickle

Resolution in Memoriam:

The Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University expresses its sorrow upon the death on April 11, 1985, of Earl J. Mickle, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics.

Professor Mickle was born in Sandusky, Ohio, on February 5, 1911, and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1928. He received a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Mount Union Colleqe in 1933 and a Bachelor's degree in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1935. He then taught science and mathematics for two years at Birmingham High School in Birmingham, Ohio. He became a Teaching Assistant in the Mathematics Depariment at Ohio State in 1957. He received his M.A. degree in March 1939 and his Ph.D. in June 1941, both in Mathematics from The Ohio State University. He was appointed Instructor in 1941, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1944, Associate Professor in 1948, and Professor in 1951. His career of service to the University extended from 1937 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1980.

Professor Mickle was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He was the author of more than twenty-five mathematical research papers in the fields of real variables, measure theory, and topological groups. He directed twelve doctoral dissertations. He served on influential committees of the Mathematics Department, the Graduate School, and the University. His loyalty to the University and his dedication to its development inspired his colleaques.

On behalf of the University, the Board of Trustees expresses to the family its deep sympathy and sense of understanding in its loss. It was directed that this resolution be inscribed upon the minutes of the Board of Trustees end that a copy be tendered to the family as an expression of the Board's heartfelt sympathy.
