Abstract: There has been a good deal of progress on eigenvalue problems, such as the problem of characterizing the possible eigenvalues of three Hermitian matrices, when one is the sum of the other two. The solutions relate this problem to that of enumerating intersections in Grassmannians, a classical subject in algebraic geometry known as Schubert calculus. This work has led to new insights in Schubert calculus as well. We will discuss this problem, as well as some recent variations.
