Vice Chair for Upper Division

11 July 2003

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

After eight years as Vice Chair for the Upper Division, Bostwick Wyman is stepping down and the end of summer quarter. It's hard to imagine not hearing his sultry, southern voice wafting through the department offices as he deftly soothes upset students or eases the burden of worried faculty; yet, alas, it will be so!

Bostwick has done a tremendous job as Vice Chair over the years scheduling faculty teaching responsibilities, coordinating classroom assignments with Mark Garner and TA assignments with Cindy Bernlohr, serving as ombusdman for calculus and above and representing the department in college and university venues. I want the thank him warmly for undertaking all these tasks so effectively and with such charm and grace. Bostwick will continue to serve as Director of the Actuarial Science Program, and will now have more time and energy to devote to this successful undergraduate program.

I'm delighted to announce that Ulrich Gerlach has argeed to serve as the new Vice Chair. Ulrich's organizational skills, professional demeanor and his delight in interacting with students will serve him well in his new duties. He will work with Bostwick over the summer, learning some of the nitty gritty details, and will take on full responsibility as Vice Chair beginning autumn quarter.

Best wishes,

Peter
