This dissertation works on a very well known family of Calabi-Yau threefolds: the
Dwork pencil of quintics. It also counts all the known degree 2 curves in the Dwork
pencil, and develops a method to calculate the relative Hilbert scheme of degree 2
curves in the Dwork pencil.
