Alain Connes (College de France, IHES-France, OSU)Abstract
I will illustrate by many examples the duality between shapes and spectra and proceed to explain the spectral point of view on geometry and physics. I will also explain how noncommutative geometry provides (with the quantum 2-sphere) an exemple of a truly "musical" shape whose spectrum is much better fitted for playing music than the spectra of ordinary commutative spaces.
