----------------------------------- Fri-Jan-24-12:46:54-EST-1997 CAI, JINFA Subject: Math Education at BNU About three weeks ago, I traveled back to China to give a few talks at Guizhou Normal University. On my way to Guizhou, I have stayed at Beijing for two days to visit my former professors, friends, and collaborators in BNU (and in People's Education Press, Beijing Educational College, and Institute of Psychology (CAS)). During my short stay at BNU, everyone I visited has shared with me their concerns about the math education program at the Department of Mathematics, BNU. For many years, BNU is well-known (nationally and internationally) institution for training competent mathematics teachers and conducting quality math education research. BNU's math department has been considered having the strongest group of math educators in China. However, this shining status does not exist any more. The old generation of the math educators are all retired except one who is professor Cao Caihan. However, he was ill due to heart problem. He has been in a critical condition prior my visit. When I visited him, he was still in hospital, under extensive care. BNU's math department does not have younger generation of math educators to continue quality work in mathematics education. Good news is that two pure math professors joined in math education program several years ago. That means that math education program may survive at BNU, but may be hard to keep the leading status. Through conversation with Professor Cao Caihan, I have learned two things which I feel sad. (1) Math Education program has difficult time to hire its own graduates. Every year, math department can hire a limited number of its own graduates. Since a program with a Ph.D. program is more privileged than the one without a Ph.D. program, and math education does not have a Ph.D. program, that is part of the reason why math education can hardly hire its own math education graduates. (2) A math educator with a Ph.D in math education from Japan has signed a contract with BNU several months ago. However, the house BNU has promised to give to that math educator with a Ph.D. is a one bedroom apartment. If I understand correctly, he is about 40 years old and married, with a child. I think it would be much better if BNU can provide him a bit more spacious place to live. Education is a unique feature for a normal university. Which direction should a normal university go? I really think BNU and its math department should do something to continue the leading role in mathematics education.

Prof. Chen Mufa, Prof. Wang Bo-Ying, and Prof. Xiao Jie at BNU.

about late Mathematician Zhou Xianyin (1963-1996) and Zhou Math Prize,

Dr. Zheng Xiaogu (New Zealand), Dr. Zhang Lianwen(Hong Kong),
and Dr. Feng Shui(Canada) have made donations to Zhou Xianyin
Math Prize.
The donation to the Prize now amounts nearly to US$1500.
Dr. Zhou Xianyin, a student of Yan Shijian and Chen Mufa at BNU,
passed away in early 1996 at age 32.
In memory of him and to recognize his outstanding contribution to
Mathematics, BNU Math Alumni overseas set up a Math Prize in his name. The
Prize will be awarded to Graduate Students of Math Dept. at BNU annually.

and network software on Silicon Graphics and Sun platforms and good communications skills are
essential. Experience with PC to UNIX networking would be a plus.
DUTIES: Responsible for the operation of the departmental computing facilities consisting of
approximately 50 Sun and 5 Silicon Graphics workstations with 8 X-terminals and 2 file servers.
Specific responsibilities include software installation on and maintenance of departmental servers
as well as individual workstations and support of the departmental network. Answering users'
software and hardware questions is also a critical part of the job. Additional duties include setting
up computer equipment, consulting with computer vendors, diagnosing hardware problems and
working with third party repair vendors, and acting as a liaison with the University of Delaware
Information Technologies unit.

She had been fighting cancer since last year. Her family members were with her when she left us. Following her own will, no official memorial service was held. Half of the ash will be buried under a tree around the Math Building and the other half goes to Chenfang Quan Laoshi, her husband. Her students alread opened a website dedicated to her, where you can find a brief biography of Xie Yu Laoshi, some of her old photos, some memorial writings by her students and two poems by Chenfang Laoshi. The meeting was focusing on the issues of celebrations of BNU 100 anniversary in 2002. He represented North American BNU Alumni to propose 1) Overseas Alumni Organization Network project; 2) Fund raising for BNU'100 events; 3) Overseas forum; and 4) Delegation back to BNU and global celebration. Leon has been appointed by BNU President Yuan Guiren as a Professor of Performance Arts and he has given a lecture to all students of School of Performace Arts and a presentation to all BNU students. The activities were covered by major media in Beijing and Nanchang during his visit in China. Leon is now working at New York University as a Director of Scientific Computing.
