Dear MATH H161 students: The homework, on paper (write on one side only) and not by e-mail, is due by Friday (09/23/2011) although Monday (09/26/2011) is also acceptable. Please staple it together if it is more than one sheet; write your name and class time on the upper right corner of the first page. HOMEWORK. Please watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THyTnt00b5I (Budapest is the capital of what European country?). Any comments? HOMEWORK. What is the (approximate) average waiting time for a campus bus (CABS) if you want to go from St. John Arena (stop #24, Westbound) to Bevis Hall (stop #10) on West Campus around 3 pm on Tuesday, October 4, 2011? You are expected to explain the solution.. NOTE. This is a serious, albeit elementary, math problem that simultaneously tests your real life survival skills, your ability to obtain easily available information, your intelligence, and your common sense. HOMEWORK. My red Lamborghini Aventador Coupe gets about 11 mpg in the city. What should I tell my friend who lives in Paris so she would understand it? You are expected to explain your answer. NOTE. The solution is not as easy as it looks like. HOMEWORK. One of my favorite stores, Penzeys Spices, located on Kenny Road in Upper Arlington, sells "Maharajah Style Curry Powder" (exact name). I regret to tell you that the description is, well, how can I state this without using the forbidden "be-es" word, hmmm, total non-sense.*) Please explain why I am making this seemingly arrogant statement. NOTE. This is another serious but equally elementary math problem that also tests your ability to obtain and digest easily available information, your intelligence, and your common sense. NOTE. Your solutions must indicate clearly whether you did it on your own or else what you used [book, internet, study groups, etc.]. There will be no penalty for the latter; in fact, I encourage group discussions. OFFICE HOURS: W 11:35 am (only by appointment) and TR 9:35 - 10:15 am @MW 610 Sincerely, Paul Nevai P.S. You can find a copy of this message at http://www.math.osu.edu/~nevai/H16x/4/ P.P.S. Please e-mail me if you want to get on/off this mailing list. *) I pointed this out Penzeys Spices many years ago but neither did they understand what I complained about nor did they change the description. That says something about the sad state of math affairs in the US.
